Pasupatinath is largest temple complex in Nepal and one of the most sacred temples for Hindu religion in Kathmandu Valley. Pasupatinath was enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ list in 1979. Pasupatinath temple is a pagoda style temple located inside fortified courtyard guarded by Semi-Military Nepal Police and Nepal Army. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the inside the temple but others can however visit the peripheral temples.
Pasupati aarati is done at the banks of Bagmati on the eastern side of the temple. Everyone has access to this area as there is no restriction here. Aarati usually starts at 6 pm in the evening. The priests of the temple perform the Aarati while devotees enchant hymns, play classical musical instruments, ring bells and burn incense. The celebration is mesmerizing.
